Van Nostrand's Mill in Springfield, Queens, NY

Which Van Nostrand?

Does anyone know of the location and history of "Van Nostrand's Mill" in Queens, NY?

It was shown in a 1902 painting by Charles Henry Miller

Is there any chance it might
Is there any chance it might have been Cornelius Van Nostrand II's Springfield Mill? He had a mill in Ontario, in what is today the city of Mississauga, on the Credit River. Its location is shown on the first map at https://www.vannostrand.ca/history. A bit further down the page is the location of lands owned by Cornelius Van Nostrand I. The older Cornelius was born in Jamaica, Long Island, NY and died in York Mills, Ontario. Might this be the one you're looking for? Sue
Hi there, doing some hunting
Hi there, doing some hunting via search engine. The only artwork I find of a mill at Springfield is entitled "Old Mill at Springfield, L.I." yet done in 1889. There is no Van Nostrand that accompanies the title. So what one would need to do is confirm by memory if the Springfield Mill art is the one shown to you. Some of C, H. Miller's art has digitized and available that the Stony Brook University Collection. Here is a direct link to "Old Mill at Springfield, L.I." http://digital.library.stonybrook.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/miller/id/261/rec/21 ---- If this is the art shown to you, then I would assume some did some property hunting via land deeds to know it was owned by a Van Nostrand. You may need to take on this type of research too to know for sure the painting goes to a Van Nostrand and to which was the owner. Best of luck, I hope this was helpful to you. Kelley
